Field Trip to Ramus (Webster)

Visit to Ramus (home of Ute Perkins and his son Absolom)
Elder Lionel Nebeker, who is our next door neighbor and serves as a Nauvoo temple missionary is my 4th cousin.  Our common ancestor is Ute Perkins.  Lyle had done some research to find that their family lived just 20 miles or so from Nauvoo to the east in a small town that was known as Perkins, then Ramus, Macedonia, and finally Webster.  


We took a field trip with Nebekers and Johnsons on April 13, 2023.  Turns out that Elder James Johnson, also serving here, had an ancestor (Joel Hills Johnson) that brought the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Perkins family.  Little by little many of them joined the church and then came with the saints to Utah.  


We started out by seeing Ute’s military headstone that was placed in the Nauvoo cemetery to the east of town.  We also saw his actual headstone in the Webster cemetery.  


The highlight of the trip for me was as we stood in the place where the first church building was built and opened the D&C 130-131 and read those precious scriptures that were received there.  It is amazing to think that this small body of saints, the Ramus stake (branch) was organized by Hyrum Smith and then that Joseph came and spoke there.  Two of Joseph’s sisters lived there at the time.  
What a special day it was to be there and reminisce about the events that must have taken place with our ancestors and now we are all here serving missions together.  We topped off the afternoon with and italian dinner in Carthage.  Sweet experience!

The Power of Godliness

Last night while in the temple, Diane and I were asked to be witnesses at a sealing. In this case it was a Woman who was being sealed by proxy to her father and mother. It was a little bit of a surprise but the temple staff scurried to get everything prepared and ready for the special event. When the temple sealer was talking to the woman, she said that her mother was very pleased. She also said that her mother had visited her and that this is what she wanted. What a tender feeling. It reminded me that in the ordinances of the gospel the power of godliness is manifested. I was grateful that Diane and I were in a position where we could be used to witness such a sacred event.

Carthage Jail

Visited the Carthage Jail with the Gale family.  It is about 25 minutes south of Nauvoo.   From the Saints -  Joseph mounted his horse and set off with Hyrum and the other men for Carthage. “I am going like a lamb to the slaughter,” he told them, “but I am calm as a summer’s morning. I have a conscience void of offense towards God and towards all men.”  The riders climbed the hill to the temple as the sun rose, casting golden light over the building’s unfinished walls.
